The Challenge: Machining 4140 Cold Rolled Steel at Speed

4140 cold rolled steel is known for its strength and stability—but those same qualities make it notoriously difficult to machine. Traditionally, you’d need to slow down speeds, manage excessive coolant mess, and accept shorter tool life.

For this test, we used:

  • Material: 4140 Cold Rolled Steel
  • Tool: CNMG120412-RP5 WPP10G insert
  • Machine: Quick Turn 250 Mazak Lathe
  • Cut Parameters:
    • Manufacturer recommended: 646 SFM, 0.011 REV
      Test parameters: 2200 SFM, 0.020 REV
